National Pool Closing Day is the third Saturday in September. With the end of summer coming near we wanted to share some tips on why you should winterize your pool.

Freezing Can Wreck Havoc on Liners

When the ice on the top layer of your pool freezes, it expands and can tear through liners as it becomes thick. Thick ice is prone to breaking and can sink causing sheets of ice to pierce the liner. This is especially true if your liner has a leak, so you want to be sure to inspect your liner during your closing process and throughout the winter months. You will also want to ensure that you have proper water level. Leaving water in your pool will protect your liner from rips and shrinkage due to freezing air.  Here are a few tips to protect your liner during winter months.

1. Use Air Pillows. Air pillows break up ice sheets and relieve outward pressure on the pool walls. 
2. Maintain a healthy water level. This will prevent your liner from drying up and shrinking. One of the best ways to maintain a healthy water level is to use a high-quality winter cover for protection. This will protect the pool from any additional water levels that may come from snow and rain.

Seasonal Weather Can Damage to Pool Equipment

With the changing weather swimming pools are more apt to buildup of lime and algae.  Taking time to close your pool properly will prevent expensive repairs to your equipment. The use of winterization chemicals can play a fundamental role in balancing out your pool chemistry to avoid these issues. Additionally, pool covers, and leaf nets will protect your pool from algae and pool matter carried in by strong winds and storms.

Be sure to drain water using drain plugs from the following pool equipment and store them (preferably indoors):

Pool Filter, Pump, Heater, and chlorinator

Checklist for Pool Closing:

• Clean the Pool – Using a pool brush and vacuum clean the pool walls and remove any unwanted debris.
• Store Equipment – Remove and store skimmer baskets, ladders, cleaners, filers, pumps, and toys.
• Check Water Level- Do not drain the pool completely and leave water level just below the skimmer basket or check with the pool cover manufacturer for appropriate water levels.
• Drain Pool Equipment (as stated above)
• Lubricate- Lubricate o-rings, valves, plugs and threads
• Secure Plumbing- Blow out lines, disconnect hoses and plug outlets
• Cover the Pool – A secure fitted cover is essential. Obtain the necessary cover pumps if applicable.
